EU Novel Food Catalogue: A Summary of January 2025 Updates

Keeping up with the EU's novel food regulations is crucial, especially when it comes to Article 4 consultation requests. These consultations lay the path to market for many food ingredients, and changes to their status can significantly impact businesses in the food industry.

January 2025 Update


Food: Dimorphandra Mollis Benth.
Status: Not yet authorised novel food
Further Details: The entry concerns the use of Dimorphandra mollis Benth, a tree species in the genus of Dimorphandra and quercetin extracted from the plant.

Quercetin (≥ 95%) obtained by extraction from the same plant was also subject to a consultation request to the German competent authority under Article 4 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283.

Both the whole plant and Quercetin (>95%) are Novel Food.



Food: Plantago Afra L.
Status: Not novel in food
Further Details: The entry refers to the seeds of Plantago Afra L., a plant species that is also known as Sand Plantain or African Plantain and belongs to the Plantaginaceae family.

The seeds can be used in foods or food supplements.



Food: Plantago Indica L.
Status: Not novel in food
Further Details: The entry refers to the seeds of Plantago Indica L., a plant species that is also known as black psyllium and belongs to the Plantaginaceae family.

The seeds can be used in foods or food supplements.



Food: Prunus Persica (L.) Batsch
Status: Not novel in food supplements
Further Details: The entry concerns the use of fruit, leaf, flower, bark and seed of Prunus persica (L.) Batsch (peach tree).

Status: Not yet authorised novel food
Further Details: A bacteria strain not commonly used in fermentation of food products.



Food: Streptococcus Thermophilus
Status: Not novel in food
Further Details: A bacteria strain used as a characteristic ingredient in fermentation of food products.



Food: Tributyrin
Status: Not yet authorised novel food
Further Details: The entry concerns the substance Tributyrin, a triglyceride naturally present in butter. The consultation however was in relation to the substance obtained through chemical synthesis.



Food: Schinopsis Lorentzii Engl.
Status: Not novel in food supplements
Further Details: The entry concerns the wood of Schinopsis lorentzii Engl. which is a species of tree in the Anacardiaceae family, that also includes cashews, mangoes, and pistachios. Commonly known as red quebracho, it’s native to South America.

The wood can be used in Food Supplements.



Food: Gallus Gallus Domesticus
Status: Not novel in food
Further Details: The entry now covers several ingredients such as: hard tissue mass , hen's eggs powder produced from pre-embryonic incubated eggs, egg membrane derived from the eggshell membranes of chicken eggs and the egg membrane hydrolysate derived from the eggshell membranes of chicken eggs, and eggshells from chicken eggs that are used for calcium fortification of foods.
